16 vie for glory in Luv FM High School Debate; launch set for September 14

ghana waves news

Tongues are wagging, excitement at fever pitch, anxiety burning in students, both present and past, of various second-cycle schools in the Ashanti Region.

Never mind the last time a traditional ruler, professor or business executive et cetera visited their alma mater.

Suddenly, people are tracing where their education ‘umbilical cord’ was cut and buried (never mind their Basic schools; they hardly talk about them). Some are asking the criteria for selecting competing schools and why their alma mater was ‘sidelined’.

Can you begrudge them? Certainly, not. For over two months,  “The Luv FM High School Debate, “Hail Your Alma Mater to Glory,’’ rams radio and television promotion.

It is, perhaps, the most exciting and impactful advertisement for a single event in recent times, especially, when ‘technical students are returning ‘’bombs’’ to owners of spoilt television sets who want them repaired.

The response and reactions in schools, campuses of tertiary institution and even in lecture halls and other academic and business spaces have been phenomenal.  “You have no idea the kind of waves this debate competition is generating in the various schools,’’ Ashanti Region Student Representative Council Co-ordinator, Ralph Sarkodie, summed up at a pre-launch meeting.

The roll call for 16 second-cycle schools in the Ashanti Region has been loud to the roof, and professors are asking why so and so school was left out.

The euphoria is set even to hit the skies, as the contest is launched and draw conducted on Friday, September 14, to get speakers of participating schools to the debating floor ( Round of 16 through to the grand finale) from 17th September to 19th October, 2018.

In an era of technology, when social and other forms of media are becoming more of distractive than learning platforms for Ghana’s future leaders, Luv 99.5 FM seeks to encourage intellectual discourse, especially, on national issues through interactive completion. Do we see them far from the issues confronting our nation or they appreciate them better than we imagine?

Organizers, The Multimedia Group Limited, Kumasi Unit, looks to institutionalise and expand the High School Debate into a national brand, comparable to any debating contest across the globe.

District, zonal and regional editions will, in future, form the basis for selecting schools to the very top.  For the maiden contest, Ashanti Region’s 12 best ranked schools in the 2017 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and four(4) others, based on performance in the National Independence Presidential Debate, have the privilege and honour to address Mr. Chairman, panel of judges…

Ghana Education Regional Directorate, Regional Student Representative Council are key partners in the initiative.
