The Western Regional Police Command has arrested two suspected robbers believed to be part of a gang allegedly terrorising staff of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, particularly the nurses and other residents around the area.
According to the police, the two suspects, Nicholas Nana Takyi and Charles Kwame Ampong were ex-convicts who were jailed 10 years each for similar offence.
The health staff and caregivers at the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital had for sometime now been under constant threat and fear as a result of the activities of armed robbers.
Some of the residents disclosed that the state of insecurity at the regional health facility was so alarming as armed robbers were reportedly inflicting blade and knife wounds on their victims before snatching their belongings.
It was revealed that night duty and night life at the hospital and its bungalows were that of fear.
Some of the health workers had confirmed the situation and had pleaded that something should be done about the situation.
Confirming the arrest, the Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku said the suspects were arrested by the SWAT Team of the Police Service.
She indicated that the arrest was made after the team had received various information about the nefarious activities of the alleged robbers.
“The police had a tip off from some community members who knew the hideouts of the suspects and moved in to arrest them”, she pointed out.
She continued” The two suspects had also been on police wanted list and the police commend the community members who gave the information about the suspects “.
Some items found in the suspects’ possession include mobile phones, phone batteries, SIM cards, ladies’ foot wears, dresses and hand bags.
According to the Regional Police PRO, the suspects could not give any tangible answer to how they acquired the items.
DSP Adiku indicated that one of the victims was able to identify her mobile phone which was among the items retrieved from the suspects.
“Three days ago, some of the victims were able to identify the suspects during an identification parade”, she added.
She indicated that the two suspects would soon be hauled before court and assured that adequate security would be given to the health and other workers at Effia-Nkwanta Hospital and its environs.
